Adaptive ability is one of the main developmental elements in the ASM philosophy. Adaptation is a skill we can develop from a well-rounded athlete perspective as well as in relation to sport-specific skills. Adaptation and balance are closely related.
The human brain is highly plastic and, by nature, can adapt very well. This is also the case for adaptations of biological, biochemical and physiological systems within the body.
Adaptability can be trained, and should be stimulated not just from an early age, but also into childhood, adolescence and the more senior years; but although motor skills can be learnt throughout life, they are most efficiently learnt when younger. Differential learning mainly focuses on multifaceted adaptability.
According to the ASM, adaptability can be trained by offering variation in practice. The intended goal of an act can stay the same, but materials, resistance, or surrounding environment can be changed. Examples are: practicing a layup on socks, use different types of balls or balls of different weights.
