Catching the ball is usually done with two hands, sometimes with one hand. The ball is caught after a pass or after a rebound.
Teaching how to catch the ball
Before starting to teach how to catch the ball, the player must have learned how to hold the ball. When learning this skill, keep the following order:
Catch a dribble on the spot
- Catch the ball at the highest point
- Grab the ball with 2 hands
- Hold the ball firmly, fingers spread and thumbs up
Catch a ball while passing it against a wall
- Start with a bouncing pass against the wall, then a chest pass
- Catch the ball: make a W with thumbs and index fingers
- Hold the ball firmly
Passing and catching between 2 players
- Catch ball from a jumpstop
- After catching the ball go into Triple Threat position
- Ball control
Execution of catching the ball
- Always expect the ball!
- Keep the eyes focused on the approaching ball
- Extend the arms to “meet” the ball, wrists bent backwards, fingers spread out and pointing forwards. (Make a W with thumbs and index fingers)
- If the ball is in the hands, reduce the speed by bending the arms
- In the case of hard balls, a foot can be put forward and placed back during catching.
- When the ball is caught, both thumbs are placed behind the ball, hold the ball firmly.
