The adaptability and balance ability both have the greatest overlap to the other coordinative abilities. Maintaining and restoring balance means constant adjustment. It is a form of differential learning, the goal remains the same, but conditions change constantly.

Sensitive period: around the PHV for girls and after the PHV for boys

Types of balance:

  • Support balance
  • Slide balance
  • Rolling balance
  • Floating balance
  • Rotational balance
  • Hanging balance
  • All combinations

The Basic Movement Skills riding and sliding are therefore necessary to develop a versatile balance. Examples:

Riding: inline skating, wave boards, skateboarding, mountain biking, cycling on a unicycle
Sliding: snowboarding, skiing, skating, sledding on a hill, boarding, canoeing and kayaking.
