Cross over step

Laatst gewijzigd 17 september 2018

Omschrijving

A cross over step is made from the triple threat position. The player with the ball wants to dribble to the right besides the defender and first steps with the left foot to the right and then dribbles past the defender.

In one single move, the attacker moves one leg to the other side next to the foot of the defender; the ball is brought quickly, nearby and in front of the body to the other side to start a dribble while protecting the ball with the front foot and the free arm.

How to teach the cross over step

  • Feet in parallel position
  • Start with the opposite foot as pivot foot.
  • At hip level, the ball is brought in both hands from one side of the body to the other (swipe motion), then make a step and make sure that foot and ball simultaneously hit the floor (timing).
  • Use a pylon or a small circle where the pivot foot should be put
  • Practice with a passive defender and later a more active defense

Leerpunten

  1. Stay low when you do the cross over step or the open step
  2. Always keep your body between the ball and the defender
  3. Always step forward and take your first step next to or past the defender
  4. Put your defender on the wrong track by first making an open step to one side, pivot back and make a cross step and dribble to the other side
