Post fundamentals

For a player in the post position it is very important that he can defeat his defender in several ways.

• He must be able to penetrate both the baseline and the middle, so that he is dangerous on the left and on the right.
• At the baseline he can be dangerous with a ‘drop step’ or a ‘drop step dribble’.  When his movement is stopped by a defender, he must have the possibility to be dangerous on the other side. The movements ‘up and under’, ‘spin’ and ‘dribble drop’ can be used here.
• Finally, he must be able to receive the ball when the bucket is defended on its side by both his defender and the help side with a ‘sikma’. And vice versa, the front of a defender will have to be punished with a ‘back through lob’.

One of the most important skills of a post-player is footwork and especially pivoting
