Omschrijving

One of the first skills that is taught in basketball is dribbling. Basketball is dribbling, dribbling is moving across the court. How good players are able to dribble determines to a large extent how deployable, mobile and versatile the player is. This begins with ball handling, a daily routine for players who want to make it in our sport. Furthermore, it is about mastering the basic techniques to dribble, speed and change direction.

Use of the forearm

For the youngest players is important to dribble with the movement of the forearm, not with the hand. The ball is not slapped with the arm, but pressed down with the forearm. In this way, the player has longer feeling with the ballto get better control of the dribble. The hand is at the top of the ball because it is easier to control the ball.

Not looking at the ball

Do not look at the ball. Of course, every beginning player will instinctively look at the ball. Playing basketball well, means you have an eye for a pass, a shot and the opponent. Not looking at the ball is therefore of the utmost importance. The head is upright and the focus of the eyes is on the court.

Fingertips

The ‘seeing’ is done with the fingers, without using the palm in the contact with the ball. Ball feeling is fundamental to be able to dribble without looking.

Away from the defender

Dribble away from the defender by hand. This means that a player can dribble with both left and right hand, if not he can only dribble in one direction. But it also means that in every drill that a trainer executes, thought is given to which hand should be dribbled.

Don’t pick up the dribble

It is important to keep the ball alive until you have or can shoot an attacker as an attacker. When the dribble is stopped, the defender will be able to increase the pressure on the ball via a ‘stick’ defense, or even a ‘kick’ of two defenders.
