Moving skills: the Athletic Skills Model (ASM)

The ASM represents the following: athletes must first become a versatile good mover; this mover grows into an athlete; the athlete will specialize in 1 sport; and finally the athlete will develop into an absolute specialist within the sport.

Coordinative abilities

The basis for good movement in basketball is the coordinative ability, also known as coordination. Coordination is more important than strength. When this is developed in the right way, this will become the basis for athletic basketball ability such as adequate adaptability, a good balance, efficient timing and a smooth and fast economic walking ability.

According to the ASM, the coordination is so important that it is divided into 7 capabilities (all of which overlap to some extent). In this way the coordination can be developed in a structured manner from all angles.

Coordinative abilities:

  1. adaptability
  2. coupling ability
  3. kinetic differentiation capacity
  4. spatial orientation ability
  5. ability to react
  6. balance ability
  7. rhythmic ability

Basic Movement skills

These coordinative abilities are found within all the basic forms of movement. The ASM has its own classification of these basic movements and are called them the Basic Movement Skills (BMS). The BMS serve as the foundation for the athletic ability of basketball players.

Conditions of movement

All Basic Movement Skills and Coordinative abilities are further developed through the 5 conditions of movement:

  1. Agility
  2. Stability
  3. Flexibility)
  4. Power (strength & speed)
  5. Endurance

Basic Movement Skills

The Basic Movement Skills (BMS) are motor skills with which we want children to experience at an early age (from the age of 4) through fun games and play. These movement skills provide a solid foundation on which to develop health, well-being and an athletic career at top sport level.

Conditions of movement

The ASM has a number of conditions for moving in an effective and safe way: agility, flexibility, stability, power and endurance. These five conditions are the basis for devlopping movement skills from childhood to adulthood.

When to teach which skill?

There are sensitive periods in the motor development of children or the so-called Windows of Trainability. By giving attention to the physical skills at the right time, considerable progress can be made in the development of the child.
